Green manufacturing is crucial to achieving sustainable development in the 21st century. According to the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, biological manufacturing has the potential to significantly lower energy consumption and waste emissions. Compared to traditional petrochemical processes, biomanufacturing cuts down energy consumption and emissions by 30% to 50% and can potentially reduce them by 50% to 70% in the future.

Microbial fermentation is a type of green technology and a field of intense research at Bloomage Biotech. We are the first in China to achieve large-scale production of hyaluronic acid by microbial fermentation. Through it, we dramatically improved resource efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

Prior to this breakthrough, hyaluronic acid was mainly extracted from animals (chicken comb, umbilical cord, etc.). The method was resource intensive and had poor yield and purity. Only one kilogram of hyaluronic acid can be extracted from 1,000 kilograms chicken comb, and the product purity was only 50% to 60%.

Deriving hyaluronic acid chemically was not ideal, either. It not only consumed vast amounts of energy, but also created plastics and synthetic fibers as byproducts, polluting the environment.

Conversely, biomanufacturing has increased the production rate of hyaluronic acid by over four times, and the improved yield has directly reduced resource consumption by 60% to 75%, and carbon emissions by 35 to 65%.
